Bike Leads
Who has the best seat to observe the full distance of the marathon or half marathon: Bike Leads!
It's often how organizers take care of the details of a race that help define the quality of the experience. Here's a detail that many participants may not notice: Marathon & Half Marathon Bike Leads. These experienced cyclists from our community volunteer to help safely guide the elites in our event through the course and across the finish line.
For this part of race production, our Bike Leads go to school. The must learn every aspect of the course on which they will lead the fastest athletes in the race. Bike Leads study the course maps, course descriptions and ride the full course.
We will have 8 bike leads: 2 each for the male & female leaders of the marathon and 2 each for the male & female leaders of the half marathon.
Our 2011 Bike Lead volunteers were organized by Bellingham Young Life. Spectators will easily see the bike leads coming from a distance with their neon yellow Young Life tech shirts. Bellingham Young Life is also using the Bellingham Bay Marathon as a fundraiser for their organization.
