Salish Sea Road Race 2020: Covid-19 Update

For outdoor running fans and supporters in the Pacific Northwest, we have mixed news. The Salish Sea Road Race, the culmination of all four marathons along the Salish Sea, is still on, but with a few changes. We and the other members of the Salish Sea Series are making health a top priority, which means a few delays and other possible changes in the works. See details below.

About the 2020 Salish Sea Road Race

A marathon series along the gorgeous coast of Washington, the Salish Sea Series normally spans from April to September each year. Runners who complete an event at three out of four races, regardless of race length, earn a special medal as well as a collection of swag and goodies. The four participating races are the Whidbey Island Marathon in April, the Capital City Marathon in May, the North Olympic Discovery Marathon in June, and finally the Bellingham Bay Marathon in September.

How to Register

By registering for 3 of 4 marathons in the Salish Sea Series, you are automatically registered for the Salish Sea Road Race! All that remains is to finish one element of each of these three races, from 5K run to relay to full marathon.

Updates by Salish Sea Race As of April 2020

North Olympic Discovery Marathon
Running virtually May 15th through June 15th

This is a gorgeous run along the coast, with frequent seal and whale sightings. Runners can choose from a full list of runs: 5k, 10k, half marathon, full marathon, and team marathon relay. Kids are invited to take part in a shorter kids’ marathon. Early bird registration ends May 31st.

Whidbey Island Marathon
Rescheduled to September 13, 2020

A memorable run through Whidbey Island’s parks, across bridges, and along the coast, this race will make anyone fall in love with western Washington. The options for this event are the 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon, as well as a 1K kids’ run. Save up to $25 per ticket by registering before July 12th.

Bellingham Bay Marathon
Running as planned on September 27, 2020

With elements of city scenery amongst open views of Bellingham Bay, this race gets visitors canceling their flights home to stay an extra week. A Boston Marathon qualifier, the marathon offers a full list of classic race lengths: 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon, and team relay. For the best price, register on or before July 31st.

Capital City Marathon
Open all of 2020 for virtual runs

Usually held in May each year, the Capital City Marathon is a beautiful tour of Olympia’s forested scenery, within walking distance of the Olympia Farmers Market and the Washington State Capitol Building. We are sad to hear about the cancellation of their 2020 race. All previously purchased 2020 tickets have been deferred to 2021.

Note: There are plans in the works for a 2020 Capital City Marathon Virtual Run: a chance to run the Capital City Marathon in the safety of your own neighborhood. While the team isn’t making any promises yet, participants will ideally be able to earn their 2020 medals and qualify for the Salish Sea Road Race through this virtual run. Stay tuned for more information!

With the North Olympic Discovery Marathon kicking things off this year, we are excited to see the Salish Sea Road Race still going strong and bringing people together in a safe and socially distant manner. We are hoping for a fun, lighthearted, and healthy marathon here in September!
